Auto-subscription for post authors
For a new person, that's not the first thing they're thinking about. It's probably not really what they're thinking about at all, in some cases, e.g. someone just diagnosed with diabetes. But people do want answers and follow-through.
Moreover, if someone is generally posting an original topic, they want to see responses. Email notifications, in the situation where someone posts an original piece of content, is not really an intrusive feature because people want follow-up. In fact, it's a standard on a platform like Facebook, where almost *any* action taken defaults you into receiving updates to that thread/area of content. Not saying that should be a standard for us/anyone, but there are certainly positive elements that can be gleaned.
I think that allowing communities to take a controlled, precise and specific approach to auto-subscription is reasonable.

Auto-subscription for post authors
Automatic subscription to new replies in a topic for a post author should be a standard feature. We have hundreds of new users visit our community everyday, and many of them post a question or comment...

Hey Matt,
While I can see your point about encouraging engagement, the flip side of auto-opting in users to e-mail notifications is that some people consider it spam. Our goal is to provide a seamless method for users to request e-mail notifications, but make them actually opt in. I'm curious do you think the current method of opting in is not utilized because it is hard to find or cumbersome? We're all for simplifying the opt in process, but I'm not sure we want to go down the road of auto-subscribing users.
Thanks for the feedback.

Email "digest"

Hey Matt,
I can see how that is confusing. We'll look at making this consistent in an upcoming release. I'm going to categorize as pending review until we have a chance to talk about this one.
Thanks,
Kevin

When can we start using the consolidated landing page for Discussions?
ASAP would be good for us.

Characters in Discussion categories
We should be able to include characters like parentheses and colons in the categories. It will be helpful for a few of the ones that we're trying to use.

Understand about text styling in comments, but even just line breaks in each of these would make things a lot better for all the above listed areas. Messages are also included in that.
I noticed that message previews have proper line breaks but then, when the message is actually sent, they don't have any.

Hmm, cool idea. A bit overwhelming to look at, IMO.
Wondering why one can only sort by date and topic title. Date makes sense. Topic title doesn't really, at least for a basic alphanumeric sort...
