*Defect*: Posts not appearing after saving/posting
    By ADAMateo

I made a post, and, though it said it was posted successfully and it appears on the main Discussions page, it is not showing up in the thread. The screenshot was taken about five minutes after I posted.

I sure hope that other users are not having the same issue or that there is a delay built in for when a post actually appears. That would be terribly confusing. Screenshots below:

(Update: seven minutes past, and it's still not showing up.)

Oh, but others have had that problem.  Interestingly enough, it always seems to happen with the number of posts is at a multiple of 15.  (it's more noticeable if you subscribe, and get the subscription notice, but the post is not there on the board.)

If there is another post, it seems to help push the missing post into view.

Good to know that it can be "pushed through", but very bad to know that many others have had that problem.

As another update: I'm now at almost half an hour after posting my reply. Still not visible. This is unfortunate because it's a conversation where I needed to step in as a moderator.

This is actually the first we have heard of this issue.

Matt, can you enter a support ticket just to make sure we track this if it is indeed a bug.  I'll get with our engineers to see what might be happening.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Sorry, I forgot to add could you also provide a URL to a topic where this is happening / has happened?

    Thanks,

I did just post a "thank you" to Matt directly from my subscription notice.  I hope that doesn't make debugging more difficult.  His post is now visible on page 2 and mine is on page 3.

I've held off on report the problem because I was waiting for a screen shot myself.

    The post is at http://connect.diabetes.org/discussions/general-discussion-type2/2010/12/17/breakthrough-lchf-cleared-by-health-police-in-swed?tr=80570#divReply_80570

    Thanks Carolyn,

My first question: Is the 1:49 PM timestamp accurate?  Is this when you actually created the post Matt and clicked "Save" or is this when the post eventually appeared?

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Can I answer that.  Yes, 1:49PM EST is the time when Matt created/saved the post.

I received my subscription notice at 12:51PM CST which is 1:51PM EST.  It only appeared after my reply was saved.

    Thanks Carolyn,

That is helpful.  I have a follow up question for you or Matt: When you first click save you should land on the topic you posted to with your post highlighted.  Is this happening here as well?  Do you originally see your post highlighted, then when you navigate away and come back to the topic its not there?  Or do you never see your post after clicking save?

At no point (until after Carolyn posted her response) did I see mine. I clicked save, got the page refresh, scrolled to the bottom, and didn't see it. I refreshed again (several times, over that thirty-ish minute time period) and didn't see it then either. Tried navigating away and back and didnt, etc.

(Do you still want me to submit a support ticket...?)

Yes, please do support a ticket when you have a moment.  We are still not able to duplicate this issue, but we will continue to troubleshoot.

    Thanks,

That was what I thought too.  I agree that refreshing does not help.

Neither is is possible to get to the invisible post by clicking on the date stamp on the home page for the discussion.  That just leaves you at the top of a page, though I can't say for sure if it is page 1 or the page where the post ought to appear.

This happened to me tearlier today, err yesterday (after midnight now)--I made my post, then started to make another, but the first hadn't showed up. So I recomposed it, posted it and bingo, there were both versions. I deleted the first one. Here's the one I kept

And yes it was the 30th post of that topic. We noticed about a week ago that when someone makes what would be the last post on a page, it shows up in the discussion list, but when you click on it and go to that thread, there is no post by that person. Then when somebody adds another post to the same thread, that multiple-of-15-posts post reappears. In one thread it happened like clockwork on post 420. 435 and 450...and I have seen it on other threads as well...

In fact this thread is up to 13 now--so if you reply twice you can see thiswhole thing in action, assuming your list functions like the ADA one...

Interesting, this report is in line with our engineer's assumption about what could be going on.  However we have still not been able to reproduce this in any other site.

Is this happening for every thread within ADA's site or just some threads?

I'm not sure that it happens every time.

I spent a little time yesterday looking for some old posts that showed 15, 30,45... post shown in the index list on a discussion landing page.  I only found a few, and in each case, that last post listed was visible when I looked for it.  The may be some other event, in addition to adding a post to the topic, that will also flush the missing post out.

Looks like that posted okay. Maybe has to do with SSO sites? Or our site's Javascript settings? Just thinking out loud...

Actually we think we have found out what is going on.  When you publish a reply the target of that reply (where you land after clicking Save) is the direct link for the post you just published.  For Matt's post (the 16th post in this thread and post 1 of page 2) that link is
    http://community.theport.com/Features/Discussions/discussion/2010/12/20/defect-posts-not-appearing-after-savingposting?tr=80827.

Copy/paste that link into your browser address bar and imagine you had just hit "save" on that 16th reply.  Notice how you load page 1 of the topic instead of the page the actual reply is on.  This happens for every post of a new page (each 15 subsequent posts from 16 up).  Notice if you scroll to the bottom of the page and click page 2, the post is actually there.

It appears our counter is off by 1 post, so the system thinks the reply you just published is on page 1 when in reality it is on page 2 (or 3 vs. 4, 4 vs. 5, etc.).  So while the post IS actually there, the direct link to that post, including the "Latest Reply" hyperlink, doesn't load the appropriate page, so it seems as if it disappeared.

Is this consistent with what you are seeing?  If so we have a fix planned for this issue but it will have to wait until after the holiday break.

It sounds like you are saying that each page consists of not 15 posts, but 16, or to be more precise, the original post plus 15 replies.

Then what you are saying is:

When you publish a reply the target of that reply (where you land after clicking Save) is the direct link for the post you just published. For Matt's post  reply (the 16th post reply  in this thread and post reply 1 of page 2) that link is
    http://community.theport.com/Features/Discussions/discussion/2010/12/20/defect-posts-not-appearing-after-savingposting?tr=80827.

Copy/paste that link into your browser address bar and imagine you had just hit "save" on that 16th reply. Notice how you load page 1 of the topic instead of the page the actual reply is on. This happens for every post of a new page (each 15 subsequent posts from 16 up). Notice if you scroll to the bottom of the page and click page 2, the post is actually there.  except that I dont recall the the pages numbers at the bottom of the page being updated to show a page 2 as a possibility at that point.

It appears our counter is off by 1 post, so the system thinks the reply you just published is on page 1 when in reality it is on page 2 (or 3 vs. 4, 4 vs. 5, etc.). So while the post IS actually there, the direct link to that post, including the "Latest Reply" hyperlink, doesn't load the appropriate page and there is not yet a way for the user to move to the next page as far as I recall, so it seems as if it disappeared.

Is this consistent with what you are seeing? If so we have a fix planned for this issue but it will have to wait until after the holiday break.

By the way, I have not been able to get that block quote feature to work.  It seems to put my entire post within the the block quote.  I had to go into the source and move my beginning and ending comments out of the block quote.  I know it'a unrelated, but it's so much easy to describe here.

Edited to get back on topic.  At this point, before navigating away from this topic,  my post that claims to be reply number 15 is now the first reply on this page, but if I click on page number 1, it also shows up as the last reply on page 1.  I don't think it will continue to show up both places once I navigate away and return.

Just to reaffirm what Carolyn said, when that post seems to be missing, it actually is missing, and there is no way to navigate to the next page--until another post is made.

Just confirming that a fix has been scheduled for this issue.  More details available here: http://community.theport.com/Features/Discussions/discussion/2010/12/23/read-this-before-posting-missing-post-here-and-now?tr=82777#divReply_82777
